A Day at the Fair - National Rumors

April 7, 2005

Well folks, it's another day at the fair, and this time we're bringing you rumors from around the Cedar Fair chain. Now you will know what's going on and how everything is going at parks other than our beloved Cedar Point.

Let's start out on the west coast at Knott's Berry Farm. Knott's recently closed one of their dark rides, Kingdom of the Dinosaurs. What could go in its place, who knows, but right now signs point to some kind of non-ride addition. Knott's will also be opening a TGI Fridays in the near future.

Jumping to the other side of the country, Dorney Park is getting ready to open Hydra: The Revenge, a new floorless coaster, as well as a new upcharge attraction, the Screamin' Swing from S&S Arrow. Dorney Park fans should be saddened to know, that if rumor has its way, another coaster will not be making its way over there until after 2007. Instead, a new flat ride may be appearing or possibly a new water park addition (ProSlide tornado, water coaster,...).

On to Michigan's Adventure, and what a mess. The park has finally gotten out of the water/sewer crisis and the services will be available no later than the 2006 season. The park reported that they have plans for a hotel and campground, and now that the water/sewer issue is out of the way, plans for a campground/village like Worlds of Fun's new overnight accommodations seem to be the next logical choice for a park addition. It is also a point to remember, as well, that Michigan's Adventure will be the park to watch in 2006, as it will be celebrating its fiftieth birthday.

Valleyfair hasn't been in the news too much lately, but they are preparing a new flat ride called RipTide as well as the Skyscraper to open this year. What does the future hold for Valleyfair? It is the only park in the chain with no adequate water park, and signs point to a new water park being built behind Excalibur, with the old one being torn down. Next coaster? Probably around the same time as Dorney Park, so don't look for anything soon.

Let's head to the newest park in Cleveland, Geauga Lake. Wildwater Kingdom is well on its way to completion and will open Memorial weekend. 2006 will bring the second half of expansion, called Phase Two. What else does General Manager Bill Spehn have in his sleeves? A hyper coaster seems the logical choice by enthusiasts, but in reality the park is rumored to be planning a complete rehab of the "old" Geauga Lake, featuring some old classics (Rotor, Himalaya) where Hurricane Hannah's used to be.

Worlds of Fun is being quite quiet right now like many other parks. With the Village opening this year, the park is clearly looking to make itself a multi-day destination. What rumors point to the park? Since the last coaster was new in 2004, don't expect a new coaster for a few years, possibly 2007. And don't even give me the B&M "rumor", that thing has been around since Cedar Fair bought the park years ago. What should we look for in the meantime? Some new flats, possibly some new restaurants, and some additions to Oceans of Fun.

The only other big rumor around right now is the trademarking of "Patriot" by Cedar Fair back in November. Cedar Fair is only known to trademark really big rides, so where could this one be going? Not Knott's, they just got a big ride. Valleyfair! isn't an option, there are other things they're focusing on there. Geauga Lake is still working on a water park, and Dorney just got a big coaster. Cedar Point has a new large attraction this year, and a coaster isn't expected for a few years. Worlds of Fun received a coaster in 2004 and is focusing on other things.

That leaves Michigan's Adventure to be the only park as the logical choice to receive a large new ride in the near future named "Patriot". What type of ride could this be? Well, all signs point to a roller coaster, and Cedar Fair usually only trademarks names of roller coasters anyways. What type of roller coaster? Your guess is as good as mine, but it's definitely going to be made of steel.
