 Mike's Message - What Next?

August 16, 2005

We all know by now that Cedar Point has been faced with some major budget cuts.  These have occurred as Cedar Fair is having a tough year and people are not visiting Cedar Point and Geauga Lake.

The first thing I need to review is what will be added next year.  It is still extremely hard to tell what will happen next year, so we will just have to watch out for some more midway markers.  The Magnum Station Renovation, for the most part, most likely will not occur.  Other minor improvements, such as bathroom renovations, may have been moved back another year.

Demon Drop has been a great attraction for Cedar Point.  It was one of the very first major thrill rides added to the park, but it is not the classic ride that many people claim it is.  Yes, it may have been the first major ride for some and yes, it may be one of the first rides people ride, but that does not mean it is a classic.  Demon Drop is also one of the first major thrill rides that people pass up.  There is a "Save Demon Drop" petition on the internet, and I refuse to sign it.  Why?  Because I am not going to be upset if it is removed.

If you want, read the petition and think about it, but I feel it will not amount to anything.

For some of you paying extra close attention at the park in the past few weeks may have noticed the extreme cut backs in the Foods Department.  It seems to me every other food stand is completely closed or closes early to relieve the staffing.  They also are cutting back on the paper cups, as some of them are now the generic white paper cups instead of the regular blue Pepsi cups.  Is this just that Cedar Point ran out of cups, or is it something else.  I believe it is something else.

From what I hear, the contract with Pepsi ends at the end of this year.  Currently, Cedar Point gets all of their Pepsi for little or no cost, since Pepsi then gets the free advertising.  Coke now may now be attempting to gain more territory and be in all the Cedar Fair parks next year.  I am not sure if it will happen, but right now everything is about saving money, and if that means going to Coke, I believe Cedar Point will do it.

Well, that's it for me.  If you hear anything interesting, send me an e-mail at mike@thepointol.com.
