 Mike's Message - More Arrivals

October 15, 2005

Things are really starting to pick up around the point.  More parts have arrived for the new ride, more construction markings, and even more rumors.  The Point Online posted photos Friday night. I am going to sort through everything with you right now.  First off, there are a lot of rumors flying about, so if you hear one, let me know about it.  Private Message me at CPForums.com.  And my very latest thoughts on Cedar Point check out The Point Online's Blog written by Jason and myself.

Two major objects have arrived at Cedar Point.  Wood and steel rebar.  At first I posted that the rebar may be used for supports for a new roller coaster for the 2007 season.  However it has now been brought to my attention that the Screaming Swing has HUGE supports.  So the rebar is obviously for the supports for the new Screaming Swing.  You can view photos of what the supports look like at ValleyFair.com.  The wood is pressured treated wood and looks similar to wood on the Mine Ride.  I believe this wood will be used as replacement wood for the ride, which is common on all wood roller coasters.

Now I’ve told you before that the Screaming Swing will go in Frontier Town, but never really specifically.  It will be place right in between the Mine Ride and Snake River Falls, literally.  The easiest description of the location is where the lockers are currently located.  The ride will be place right on the midway, just like maXair was.  The queue line will use part of Snake River Falls queue, and will be right next to it.  The lockers will be moved up against the wall of the bathrooms, which is an old Sky Ride station.  The Mine Ride exit will most likely be diverted in between the bathrooms and the Mine Ride station.  I believe the main reason construction has not started is because it would block the exit to the Mine Ride and the entrance to Snake River Falls.

When will the announcement be for the Swing?  I’m not sure.  I do know one thing; they are waiting for a reason.  Valleyfair is also getting a Screaming Swing, however they announced theirs on September 23.  Cedar Point wants hype for next year.  Cedar Point learned with maXair that one thrill ride will not boost attendance.  When you tell someone about the new Screaming Swing and its motions, the first they say is, “Didn’t they just build that?!”.  Admit it, a Screaming Swing is maXair without the spinning.  The Screaming Swing will be a completely different ride and offer completely different thrills, but the general public doesn’t know that.  That’s why Cedar Point could be adding more than just a Screaming Swing.

I’ve heard a couple rumors about what the second ride will be.  One of these rides is a Huss Suspended Top Spin.  Cedar Fair already has two Suspended Top Spins.  One at Knott's Berry Farm and one at ValleyFair!.  Both are called RipTide.  The best part about both of these rides is that they can be programmed to be water rides.  They feature water jets underneath the ride that shoot water upwards, and on hot days, it is set so the water hits riders.  This ride also has a small footprint, and could go at the old location of the Swan Boats.  No need to fill in the pond, just build it over it.  You can use part of the Thunder Canyon queue line, and it would be a perfect fit.

The other possibility would be a S&S wooden roller coaster.  This idea was brought to me by Cid, a member at CPForums.com.  He believes in an S&S package deal, in which both rides next year will be built by S&S.  His theory would also offer a good explanation of what the wood is for, however I still believe it will be used for Mine Ride.

New shipments of pieces are supposedly arriving early Monday or Tuesday morning between the hours of 2 and 4am.  The Point Online will have photos Friday night on the new arrival next week.  I think that’s everything for now.  For the latest updates, be sure to check out The Point Online's Blog and CPForums.com.  Also be sure to check out our Editorial Editor’s 2005 Closing Thoughts.
