Indoor Water Park Closure

The past several weeks we have toured the three indoor water parks in Sandusky. We journeyed to the deserts of Africa, the woodlands of Canada, and a tropical island. All three of the water parks offer unique themes and transport you into a different world. It is up to you as to which world you would like to visit.

Kalahari Resort is Sandusky’s largest indoor water park resort, featuring an 80,000 square foot indoor water park resort and 596 guest rooms. Kalahari is the newest resort in Sandusky and has started construction on a 95,000 square foot convention center. The indoor water park is known for the FlowRider and Zip Coaster.

Great Wolf Lodge is Sandusky’s oldest indoor water park resort, as it has been around for five years and is Ohio’s First indoor water park. Great Wolf Lodge features a 33,000 square foot indoor water park and 271 guest rooms. Great Wolf Lodge has a niche in the market, as it has been around the longest and is known for its high quality, family-friendly services.

Castaway Bay is Cedar Point’s Indoor Water Park that opened in November of 2004. Castaway Bay features a 38,000 square foot indoor water park and 237 guest rooms. Castaway Bay is known for its tropical theming, being an official Cedar Point Resort, and Rendezvous Run.

A statistic that I developed is the room per square footage ratio. It simply is how many square feet of water park the resort has for every one room. Here is the final numbers:

Kalahari Resort: 134 Square Feet per every one room
Great Wolf Lodge: 122 Square Feet per every one room
Castaway Bay: 160 Square Feet per every one room

A common misperception is that people believe a water park would be really crowded because of its size. For example, some may believe Castaway Bay would get really crowded because of the water parks smaller size, however, Castaway Bay has the least amount of guest rooms. Therefore, you must look beyond the size of a water park and more as to what the whole resort offers.

The three water parks in Sandusky have changed the way tourists visit Erie County. Now, you, the visitor, can enjoy a weekend away during the winter, as well as in the summer, to beautiful Erie County. The future for indoor water parks also looks to be bright in Sandusky. Right across from Kalahari will be built Coyote Falls Lodge, another indoor water park resort that will be smaller than Kalahari. I have also heard of a water park that would be built in-between Comfort Suites and Comfort Inn, but this water park was delayed after the announcement of Coyote Falls.
