Cedar Point Rides: Mantis

Mantis

Mantis Mantis is not one of those coasters that takes you off your feet. In fact, you stand for the entire ride. Mantis is a stand-up, inverted roller coaster. Built by B&M of Switzerland, the same company who built Raptor. Mantis has received its fair share of accolades from coaster enthusiasts. Mantis, when added in 1996, was the world's tallest stand-up roller coaster. The coaster has had its fair share of controversy; it was originally named "Banshee", but Cedar Point buckled under public pressure because the name had an evil connotation to some groups. The controversy around its name didn't affect its opening time. Mantis opened, as scheduled, in May 1996, and has been delighting riders since then. Mantis starts out by traveling up to the 145 foot hill. The train crests the hill, and like Raptor, speeds down into a vertical loop. The speed doesn't stop there, 3 more inversions await riders before pulling into the station. Be sure to stand up the entire ride, if you attempt to sit down, your legs will be numb by the end of the ride--if you already aren't numb with fear.
